EUBP Talk #2: From Organic Waste to Plastic Monomers
For our second EUBP Talk entitled “From organic waste to plastic monomers”, Joachim Venus, from the Leibniz-Institut für Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie e.V. (ATB), will cover the results of two BBI-funded projects, CAFIPLA and PERCAL, which have investigated the use of organic waste to produce plastic monomers. Biowaste can be the source of feedstock for the bioeconomy.
PERCAL focused on Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) as a feedstock to develop intermediate chemical products at high yield and low impurity level with huge industrial interest. CAFIPLA is implementing a novel approach to biomass pre-treatment. As opposed to current sugar/starch-dominated bio-economy schemes, the CAFIPLA project relies on the combination of a Carboxylic Acid Platform (CAP) and Fibre Recovery Platform (FRP), to valorise biomass into biochemicals, bioproducts, feed and biomaterials.
