In each issue of the Bioplastics Bulletin, we present 5 facts about a member of European Bioplastics. In this issue, Andrej Brejc, Managing Director at Succinity GmbH provides an insight into bio-based succinic acid, a promising building block for various bioplastic applications.
5 facts about Succinity GmbH
- Succinity, a Joint Venture between BASF and Corbion, is dedicated to the commercialization of Succinity Biobased Succinic Acid® (BBSA).
- BBSA is based on a proprietary fermentation process that allows usage of renewable feedstocks, such as glucose, sucrose and glycerol, and in the future also its production from second generation renewable feedstocks.
- Besides the flexible use of biomass, the elaborated process also provides a product of the highest purity in a very efficient manner without major waste streams. Due to the high bio based content and CO2 fixation during the production process, Succinity’s BBSA can help our customers to significantly reduce their material carbon footprint up to >60% than that of fossil-based succinic acid.
- BBSA, as a very versatile monomer, offers a multitude of potential uses for the production of bio-based and biodegradable polymers as for example polybutylene succinate (PBS) which is suitable for a variety of everyday products (e.g. disposable items as coffee cups and capsules) and many more.
- Succinity is headquartered in Duesseldorf, Germany, and operates a 10kt/year commercial plant at the Corbion site in Montmeló, Spain.
