Members Meeting on 04 June 2024 in Brussels Reminder
Dear Members,
This is a gentle reminder to attend and actively participate in our next General Assembly on 4 June 2024 in Brussels! This time there will be a special reason why you should participate this time around. We will elect a new EUBP Board for which our call for candidacies is still open until 15 May. We will also propose measures to change and improve the association and make it fit to face the increased challenges and opportunities which our sector will face in the coming years. At the General Assembly of 14 December 2023, a first draft assessment of the functioning of the association was presented to you by an external consultant on behalf of the Board (Donald Summers from the Altruist Group). Based on this assessment, we have received strategic advice with a range of suggestions for improvement. One of the recommendations was to strengthen the advocacy capability of EUBP and to reinforce the already existing Brussels office. In this respect, the Board decided to finally tackle a contentious issue which has been the cause of internal friction over many years: to stay in Berlin or move EUBP headquarters to Brussels, the centre of EU policy making, and establish EUBP as a non-profit association under Belgian law. Such a move raises complex questions with regard to trade association, fiscal and labour law, both in Germany and in Belgium. The Board has tasked two affiliated German and Belgian law firms to assess the implications of such a move, and to give a recommendation on the best way forward. This assessment and recommendation will be presented at the General Assembly on 4 June in Brussels. As you can see, the General Assembly will be well worth attending, so your presence and active participation will be highly appreciated and necessary, in order to help pave the way for growth and success of our association. As a reminder, any resolutions to be taken at the General Assembly which involve a potential change to the statutes “require the personal attendance or proxy of at least one third of members and the approval of at least three quarters of those members in personal attendance or represented by proxy” (§ 9, para 12 of the Statutes of EUBP). Should you not be able to attend personally, please make sure to give a proxy to a member representative of your trust who is registered for participation so the required quorum of a third of members can be achieved, and potentially far-reaching decisions be taken. We look forward to welcoming you in Brussels on 4 June 2024. Best regards, Mariagiovanna Vetere and Franz Kraus Vice-Chairs of European Bioplastics
